About Monument Cloud

What exactly is Monument Cloud?

Monument Cloud is a privacy focused photo management system. It helps you back up and organize all of your photos without giving up your privacy. That means all of your photos and videos are protected and available only to you.

With its advanced AI software, Monument organizes your photos automatically by faces, scenery and other properties.

It's the secure way to store and manage your photos and videos in the cloud.

How is it different than Google Photos?

Google has taken control from you and uses your private data to serve you more ads. The more data they can collect, the better they can profile you.

Most users are either unaware their personal information is being used like this or fine with the tradeoff.

We strive to build the best photo management solution by keeping your needs at the center while providing security and privacy.

Additionally, Monument offers more functionality to import and export your photos from other devices such as creating additional backups, importing from external drives by keeping the existing folder structure, exporting metadata and more.

If you want to dig into the details, you can read more on this page.

Why pay for my photos if I can get it free from Google?

Today, businesses collect, use, share, and sell consumer data to keep their services free. Users actually pay with their personal data which later can influence our choices and shape behavior according to advertisers' preferences.

Our photos reflects our private lives and it should not be a tool for companies to gain profit. We should decide what is being done with our personal information.

Finally, when you use Google Photos with the free plan, your photos loose their original quality and downsized. Also, videos higher than 1080p are resized.

Our goal at Monument is to keep your photos and videos safe, private and easy to manage -you have the full control on your own photos.

What's the difference between Hosted and Self-hosted options?

With the hosted plan, your content is hosted fully encrypted on the Cloud. And you always have an access to the latest features.

If you want to store your photos on your own computer, external drive or on your own NAS (Network Attached Storage), you can download and install the Monument software (self hosted) to your computer. This is ideal for users who own a storage and want to keep their content on them. It's a one-time purchase and does not include future major software releases which requires additional purchase.

I'm an existing Monument user. What does this mean for me?

You can continue keeping your Monument to have access to the almost the same feature set.
If you prefer keeping your content fully encrypted on the cloud, instead of your own drive - then you can switch to Monument Cloud.

Can I share Monument Cloud with my family?

Yes, Monument Cloud is designed to share your storage with your family and friends. You can add up to 5 users to your storage plan.

How can I transfer my photos to Monument Cloud?

Just install the Monument app to your phone or computer and Monument will automatically back up all of your photos and videos fully encrypted, in their original resolution. That's it.

Which devices can I install Monument Cloud?

Monument apps are available on iOS, Android, Mac, Linux and Windows. There's no way to access your content using web browsers.

Privacy and security

What is zero-knowledge?

Monument uses end-to-end encryption to protect your uploaded content. Once they're backed up, all of your data is stored fully encrypted and only you have the key to access. This ensures security even if our systems are compromised.

How secure it is?

When you use Monument Cloud, all data is encrypted before and during the transmission. All of your content that are stored are encrypted using the password you created on your mobile device. If you forget your password, there is no way that anyone, including Monument engineers, to decrypt or restore your data.

What user information do you keep on your servers?

We store only the data we need to authenticate you, and anonymous application logs to troubleshoot errors. Your photos and videos are fully encrypted and only you have the access.

How Monument processes my content in the cloud?

Monument uses an encrypted session key that can only be created by the Monument apps and used by the server side AI software to process and organize your content. The session keys are never stored and they're limited during the session. Once the processing is completed, the session keys are discarded. This process is completely invisible and automatic.

When you create your Monument Cloud account on your devices, Monument apps generate your unique private key that is encrypted using the password throughout our system.

Which infrastructure do you use for storage?

We utilize Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage for the storage.

Does Monument store my password?

Monument does not keep your password, only a secure key to authenticate you and a session key to process your content. Your photos and videos are stored fully encrypted and only you can open them with your own password. That means, even if our servers were hacked, none of your content can be viewed. If you forget your password, there is no way to restore it.

Who is behind Monument?

Monument began life in 2016 by a group of engineers and designers after looking for an easy solution to back up and organize photos scattered across multiple hard drives and computers without giving up on privacy and security.
